Leading with Humility: Crystal Conrad – A Health Protection Star (2026)

A Wave of Humility: Uncovering Crystal Conrad's Impact

Imagine receiving a call that changes your perspective on your entire career. That's exactly what happened to Crystal Conrad, a humble healthcare hero, when she learned she'd be honored with Nova Scotia Health's Making Waves Award of Distinction.

Crystal's reaction to the news was one of disbelief, a true testament to her character. With over three decades in healthcare, including two decades as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) in Western Zone, Crystal has dedicated her career to teamwork, humility, and service. Her work in the health protection division of Public Health has been a labor of love, supporting individuals and communities affected by communicable diseases.

"I feel like I'm just one cog in the big wheel of health protection," Crystal humbly shares. "I'm fortunate to work with an incredible team of smart, dedicated individuals."

Melissa Legge, the PHN immunization lead who nominated Crystal for the award, couldn't disagree more. "Crystal is an unsung hero, a true mentor, and a dear friend," Melissa says. "She embodies the spirit of nursing, bringing thoughtfulness, grace, and humor to every challenge. She's an invaluable asset to our team and Nova Scotia Health."

A Passion for Health Protection

Health protection, Crystal explains, is a unique space where nursing assessment skills are paramount. From investigating communicable diseases to educating the public and collaborating with partners, the work is complex, ever-evolving, and deeply engaging.

"We're on the front lines every day, providing advice and support to healthcare providers," Crystal shares. "We work closely with long-term care facilities, infection prevention teams, and others to prevent the spread of illness in our healthcare facilities and communities."

Much of this work happens behind the scenes, often unnoticed. For most of Crystal's career, the role of health protection in keeping Nova Scotians safe and healthy was largely unseen. That changed in 2020 when the pandemic brought this critical work into the public eye.

During this time, Crystal's focus shifted from supporting her zone to leading the provincial response. She served as a team lead for nurses across Nova Scotia, many of whom were new to health protection. They were joined by other Public Health team members - health promoters, dental hygienists, community home visitors, and more - who came together with a shared purpose.

"We had a collective intention to keep our community safe," Crystal reflects. "It was a challenging but transformative experience, and the relationships we built during that time have changed the way we work together provincially."

Mentorship and Passing the Torch

Crystal's pride in collective success is a core part of her identity, as is her gratitude for the women who mentored her throughout her career. She names Kim Benjamin, Karen McMullin, Carolyn Power, Nadine Saunders, and Kim McGill as current and former colleagues who shared their wisdom and left a lasting impression.

"These women have been instrumental in shaping my career," Crystal shares. "Their mentorship has been invaluable, and I'm honored to pay it forward to the many young nurses entering Public Health."

To these aspiring nurses, Crystal offers this advice: "Every interaction matters, whether in person or over the phone. Be open to change, be flexible, and take every opportunity to build your capacity. Each experience adds to your assessment abilities."

Crystal's Making Waves Award of Distinction is a testament to a career built on curiosity, compassion, and collaboration. Her story reminds us that we can have a lasting impact through daily acts of teamwork, mentorship, and keeping our clients at the heart of our work.

She is so much more than a cog in a wheel - she's a wave of humility and inspiration.
